How Should Muslims Respect Quran or Hadith Displayed on Their Walls as Art at Home?

Bismillah Rahman Rahim – In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful.

Firstly, we ask Allah to forgive us for any wrongdoings, to guide us in providing the correct answers to help the Ummah, and for wisdom in understanding His commands.

The Holy Quran

The Holy Quran are the words which revelled by Allah to his beloved Prophet, the final and last messenger, Muhammad S.A.W, the seal of Prophethood. Muslims from all around the world believe that there is only one God and He is Allah, and that the final Prophet is Muhammad PBUH.

Furthermore, they also believe that the Quran is the final revelation from God and a guide on how to properly worship, obey and live a life according to Gods commands.

The Holy Quran has been reserved since revelation and till this day is memorised by millions across the world, letter to letter, page by page from cover to cover.

Respect for Quran Verses Displayed as Islamic Home Décor

The Quran is the word of Allah, and its verses must be honoured in every way. Whether it is recited, memorized, or displayed, Muslims are obliged to treat it with profound respect. This respect extends to Islamic wall art or home décor featuring Quranic verses.

Allah says in the Quran:

فَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ فَٱسۡتَمِعُواْ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُواْ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُرۡحَمُونَ
“So when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.”
(Surah Al-A’raf 7:204)

Although this verse refers to listening to Quranic recitation, it highlights the reverence Allah commands for His words. Similarly, when displaying Quranic verses in a home, the space should reflect that same reverence.

Guidelines for Displaying Quranic Verses

When incorporating Quranic verses into home decor, certain considerations should be made:

  • Placement in the home: Avoid placing Quranic wall art in areas like bathrooms or kitchens where disrespect might unintentionally occur. Living rooms, study areas, or bedrooms are ideal locations where the sanctity of the verses is maintained.
  • Avoid sin in its vicinity: Do not allow actions or behaviors contrary to Islamic teachings in places where Quranic verses are displayed. For example, music with inappropriate lyrics, indecent images, or uncleanliness should be avoided.
  • Physical cleanliness: Ensure the area is clean, as maintaining purity is part of respecting Allah’s words.

Allah mentions in the Quran:

إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانٞ كَرِيمٌ فِي كِتَٰبٖ مَّكۡنُونٖ لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ
“Indeed, it is a noble Quran, in a Register well-protected; none touch it except the purified.”
(Surah Al-Waqi’ah 56:77–79)

While this verse speaks about the physical Quran, its principles extend to art and decor featuring Quranic verses. The surrounding environment must remain clean and pure.

Respect for Hadith Being Displayed as Islamic Wall Art

While Quranic verses are the direct words of Allah, Hadith represents the wisdom, teachings, and practices of our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). They guide Muslims in applying the teachings of the Quran to daily life. Thus, Islamic wall artfeaturing Hadith holds an equally revered position in Islamic home decor.

The respect for Hadith is rooted in the status of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as Allah’s beloved and the “Mercy to the worlds” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:107). His words and actions exemplify the highest forms of morality and piety, which Muslims strive to emulate.

Allah says in the Quran:

لَّقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِي رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٞ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرٗا
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah often.”
(Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21)

When displaying Hadith as Islamic home décor, the same rules for placement, cleanliness, and respect apply. The Hadith often reinforce Quranic principles, and treating them with care honours the Prophet (PBUH) and his legacy.

The Message of Respect in Modern Islamic Art

Islamic art is a powerful tool for spirituality and reflection. Beyond its aesthetic beauty, it allows Muslims to integrate faith into their living spaces. Modern Islamic art prints featuring Quranic verses or Hadith serve as reminders of Allah’s words and the teachings of our beloved Prophet (PBUH).

Allah says in the Quran:

ٱلَّذِينَ يَذۡكُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ قِيَٰمٗا وَقُعُودٗا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمۡ وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِي خَلۡقِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
“Those who remember Allah while standing or sitting or lying on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth…”
(Surah Aal-E-Imran 3:191)

By incorporating these reminders into home décor, Muslims establish a continuous connection with their Creator. These artistic representations serve as tools for reflection and inspiration, fostering environments that prioritize piety and moral living.
