What makes this month Rabi’ Al-Awwal  special?

Rabi’ Al-Awwal is the third month of the Islamic calendar, significant for Muslims as it marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in 570 CE. The Prophet was born an orphan, and his life exemplified care for orphans, fasting on Mondays, speaking good words, and visiting the sick. His Sunnah (traditions) is a source of guidance for Muslims, with key lessons on compassion and devotion. Although Rabi’ Al-Awwal has no obligatory worship practices, it offers a time for reflection on the Prophet’s life. The month also marks his passing in the 10th year of Hijrah.

Is there any specific worship I should perform during Rabi’ Al-Awwal?

Although there aren’t any mentions of specific worship which should be increased during this month, it is a month that marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). During this month, it would be wise for one to read and learn about the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and bring his practices into one’s life. There are so many lessons we can take from his life such as small things like the use of a miswaak when performing ablution to simply smiling at another fellow human being. There are also actions which are recitation-based that we can practise and perform such as increasing the recitation of Durood Shareef (salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

What else should I know about Rabi’ Al-Awwal?

It is commonly believed amongst most scholars that the Prophet was born in this month and that he also passed away in this month. From this, we can reflect on life and death, and how the Prophet lived his life but also how he spoke of death.  Allah also mentions in the Quran:

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَمَن زُحْزِحَ عَنِ النَّارِ وَأُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ فَقَدْ فَازَ وَما الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلاَّ مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ

“Every soul shall taste death. And you will be paid your wages in full on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is distanced from the Fire and admitted to the Garden, has indeed triumphed. And the life of this world is only the enjoyment of delusion.” [3:185]

And the Prophet lived his life in this manner, where he forbade all that which was evil and warned us of those actions. Therefore we should also be mindful of our sins and put more effort into practising good actions and increasing them throughout this month.
